صاحب اطفالی ز غم میسوختی
خار کندی تا شب و بفروختی

بود بس درویش و پیر و ناتوان
مانده در اطفال و در جفتی جوان

تا که نشکستی تنش صد ره نخست
دست کی دادیش یک نان درست

خانهٔ او در میان دشت بود
ناگهی موسی برو بگذشت زود

دید موسی را که میشد سوی طور
گفت از بهر خداوند غفور

از خدا در خواه تا هر روزیم
میفرستد بی زحیری روزیم

زانکه تا یک گرده دستم میدهد
دور گردون صد شکستم میدهد

خار باید کند هر روزی مرا
تا بدست آید مگر روزی مرا

از خدای خویش آن میبایدم
کز سر فضلی دری بگشایدم

چون بشد موسی و با حق راز گفت
قصهٔ آن پیر عاجز باز گفت

حق تعالی گفت هرچ آن پیر خواست
هیچ در دنیا نخواهد گشت راست

لیک دو حاجت که من میدانمش
گر بخواهد آن روا گردانمش

باز آمد موسی و گفت از خدا
نیست جز دو حاجتت اینجا روا

چون دوحاجت امرت آمد از اله
غیر دنیا هرچه میخواهی بخواه

مرد شد در دشت تا خار آورد
وآن دو حاجت نیز در کار آورد

پادشاهی از قضا در دشت بود
بر زن آن خارکش بگذشت زود

صورتی میدید بس صاحب جمال
در صفت ناید که چون شد در جوال

شاه گفتا کیست او را بارکش
آن یکی گفتا که پیری خارکش

شاه گفتا نیست او در خورد او
کس نمیدانم به جز خود مرد او

در زمان فرمود زن را شاه دهر
تا که در صندوق بردندش به شهر

چون نماز دیگری آن خارکش
سوی کنج خویش آمد بارکش

دید طفلان را جگر بریان شده
در غم مادر همه گریان شده

باز پرسید او که مادرتان کجاست
قصه پیش پیر برگفتند راست

پیر سرگردان شد و خون میگریست
زانکه بی زن هیچ نتوانست زیست

گفت یا رب بر دلم بخشودهٔ
وین دوحاجت هم توام فرمودهٔ

یا رب آن زن را تو میدانی همی
این زمان خرسیش گردانی همی

گفت این و رفت با عیشی چو زهر
از برای نان طفلان سوی شهر

شاه چون با شهر آمد از شکار
گفت آن صندوق ای خادم بیار

چون در صندوق بگشادند باز
روی خرسی دید شاه سرفراز

گفت گوئی او پری دارد مگر
هر زمانش صورتی باشد دگر

هین برید او را بجای خویش باز
تا مگر بر ما پری ناید فراز

خارکش در شهر چون بفروخت خار
نان خرید و سوی طفلان رفت زار

دید خرسی را میان کودکان
در گریز از بیم او آن طفلکان

خارکش چون خرس را آنجا بدید
گفتیی صد تشنه یک دریا بدید

گفت یا رب حاجتی ماندست و بس
همچنانش کن که بود او این نفس

خرس شد حالی چنان کز پیش بود
در نکوئی گوئیا زان بیش بود

چون شد آن اطفال را مادر پدید
هر یکی را دل ز شادی بر پرید

مرد را چون آن دو حاجت شد روا
آمد آن فرتوت غافل در دعا

ناسپاسی ترک گفت آن ناسپاس
کرد حق را شکرهای بی قیاس

گفت یارب تا نکو میداریم
قانعم گر همچنین بگذاریم

پیش ازین از ناسپاسی میگداخت
قدر آن کز پیش بود اکنون شناخت

English translation

A man with children was burning with sorrow; He gathered thorns until night and sold them. He was very poor, old, and frail, Stuck with children and a young wife. Until his body was broken a hundred times first, When did he ever receive a whole loaf of bread? His house was in the middle of the desert; Suddenly, Moses passed by him swiftly. He saw Moses heading toward Mount Sinai, And said, 'For the sake of the Forgiving Lord, Ask God so that every day, my daily bread He sends without my suffering. Because until a single loaf reaches my hand, The rotation of the heavens breaks me a hundred times. I have to dig up thorns every day Just so my daily bread might be obtained. What I need from my God Is for Him to open a door of grace for me.' When Moses departed and shared his secret with the Truth, He recounted the story of that helpless old man. God Almighty said, 'Whatever that old man asked for, Will never come true in this world. But there are two wishes that I know of; If he asks for them, I will grant them.' Moses returned and said from God, 'Nothing but two wishes will be granted to you here. Since the command for two wishes has come to you from God, Ask for whatever you want besides worldly wealth.' The man went into the desert to gather thorns, And also bring those two wishes into action. By chance, a king was in the desert, And quickly passed by the thorn-gatherer's wife. He saw a face of immense beauty; It cannot be described how he was captivated. The king asked, 'Who is the one who bears her burden?' Someone said, 'An old thorn-gatherer.' The king said, 'He is not worthy of her, I know no one except myself as her man.' Immediately, the king of the era commanded the woman To be carried in a chest to the city. When it was time for the afternoon prayer, that thorn-gatherer, Bearing his burden, came to his corner. He saw the children with their hearts roasting, All weeping in sorrow for their mother. He asked them, 'Where is your mother?' They told the old man the true story. The old man became bewildered and wept blood, Because without a wife, he could not live at all. He said, 'O Lord, You have had mercy on my heart, And You have granted me these two wishes. O Lord, You know that woman; Turn her into a bear at this very moment.' He said this and left, with a life bitter as poison, Toward the city for the sake of his children's bread. When the king returned to the city from the hunt, He said, 'O servant, bring that chest.' When they opened the chest again, The proud king saw the face of a bear. He said, 'It seems she must have a fairy, perhaps, Every moment she takes a different form. Come, take her back to her own place, Lest a fairy comes upon us.' When the thorn-gatherer sold the thorns in the city, He bought bread and went toward the children, weeping. He saw a bear among the children, And those little children fleeing in terror from it. When the thorn-gatherer saw the bear there, It was as if a hundred thirsty men saw an ocean. He said, 'O Lord, only one wish remains; Make her just as she was this moment.' The bear instantly became as she was before; In beauty, it seemed she was even more. When the mother appeared to those children, Everyone's heart leaped out of joy. When those two wishes of the man were fulfilled, That decrepit, heedless man came to prayer. That ungrateful one abandoned ungratefulness, And offered measureless thanks to the Truth. He said, 'O Lord, as long as You keep me well, I am content if You leave me just like this.' Before this, he was melting from ungratefulness; Now, he recognized the value of what he had before.
