گشت لیلی پیش از مجنون هلاک
بود غایب آن زمان مجنون پاک

عاقبت مجنون چو با آنجا رسید
آنچه نتوانست دید آنجا شنید

آن یکی گفت ای دلت پر شور او
خیز تا با تو نمایم گور او

گفت حاجت نیست این با من مگوی
زانکه من آن خاک بشناسم ببوی

این بگفت و راه گورستان گرفت
نعره زن شد شیوهٔ مستان گرفت

خاک میبوئید و در ره میشتافت
تا که گور لیلی آخر باز یافت

ماتم آن ماه را تاوان بداد
ساعتی بی خود شد آخر جان بداد

چون بپاکی زو برآمد جان پاک
در بر اودفن کردندش بخاک

زنده او از عشق جانان بود و بس
لاجرم بی او فرو رفتش نفس

English translation

Layla perished before Majnun, The pure Majnun was absent at that time. Eventually, when Majnun arrived there, He heard there what he could not bear to see. Someone said, 'O you whose heart is full of passion for her, Arise so that I may show you her grave.' He said, 'There is no need, do not speak of this to me, For I recognize that earth by its scent.' Saying this, he took the path to the graveyard, Crying out, behaving like a drunkard. He smelled the dust and rushed along the way, Until at last he found Layla's grave. He paid the toll of mourning for that moon, Became beside himself for an hour, and finally gave up his soul. As his pure soul left him in purity, They buried him in the earth by her side. He lived only by the love of the beloved and nothing else, Inevitably, without her, his breath ceased.
