بخش ۱۲ - الحكایة و التمثیل / Section 12 - The Tale and the Parable

کاملی گفته ست میباید بسی
علم و حکمت تا شود گویا کسی

لیک باید عقل بی حد و قیاس
تا شود خاموش یک حکمت شناس

دم مزن چون کن مکن مینشنوند
با که گوئی چون سخن مینشنوند

ور کسی میبشنود اسرار تو
مینشیند از حسد در کار تو

کوه با آن جمله سختی و وقار
هرچه گوئی باز گوید آشکار

روی در دیوار کن وانگه خموش
زانکه آن دیوار دارد نیز گوش

ور تودر دیوار خواهی گفت راز
هست دیوار لحد با آن بساز

English translation

A perfect master has said: much knowledge and wisdom are required for someone to begin to speak; But boundless intellect and reason are needed for a knower of wisdom to fall silent. Breathe not a word, for they do not listen to the commands of 'do' and 'do not'; to whom would you speak, since they do not listen to speech? And if anyone does hear your secrets, they will scheme against your affairs out of envy. Even the mountain, with all its hardness and dignity, openly echoes back whatever you say to it. Turn your face to the wall and remain silent, for that wall has ears as well. And if you must reveal a secret to a wall, there is the wall of the grave—make peace with that.
