داشتی در راه ایاز سیمبر
خانهٔ هر روز بگشادیش در

در درون خانه رفتی او پگاه
پس از انجا آمدی نزدیک شاه

این سخن گفتند پیش شهریار
شهریار آنجایگه شد بی قرار

خواست تا معلوم گرداند تمام
تادر آن خانه چه دارد آن غلام

آمد و آن خانه رادر کرد باز
پوستینی دید شاه سر فراز

حال آن حالی بپرسید از ایاس
گفت ای خسرو از اینم خودشناس

روز اول چون گشاد این در مرا
بوده است این پوستین در بر مرا

روز اول کاین غلامت بنده بود
در برش این پوستین ژنده بود

باز چون امروز چندین قدر یافت
نه زخود کزشاه عالی صدر یافت

چون به بینم پوستین خود پگاه
بعد از آن آیم بخدمت پیش شاه

تا فراموشم نگردد کار خویش
پای بیرون ننهم از مقدار خویش

کآنکه پای از حد خود بیرون نهد
پای بر گیرد ز جان در خون نهد

English translation

Ayaz the silver-bosomed had on his way A room whose door he opened every day He would go inside that room early in the morning Then from there he would come to the King They spoke of this before the monarch The monarch became restless right there He wanted to know completely What that slave kept in that room He came and forced the door of that room open The exalted King saw a sheepskin coat He immediately asked Ayas about this state He said, 'O King, I know myself through this. The first day you opened this door to me, I had this sheepskin coat on my body. The first day this slave was yours, He had this tattered sheepskin coat on his body. Now that today he has found so much worth, It is not from himself, but from the exalted King. So I look at my own sheepskin coat early in the morning, After that I come to serve before the King, So that I do not forget my own past condition, And I do not step beyond my own measure. For whoever steps beyond his own limit, Takes his foot from life and places it in blood.'
