روستائیی بشهر مرو رفت
در میان مسجد جامع بخفت

بود بر پایش کدوئی بسته چست
تا نگردد گم در آن شهر از نخست

دیگری آن باز کرد از پای او
بست بر پا خفت بر بالای او

مرد چون بیدار شد دل خسته دید
کاین کدو بر پای آن کس بسته دید

در تحیر آمد و سرگشته شد
گفت یا رب روستائی گشته شد

ای خدا گر او منم پس من چه ام
ور منست او او نگوید من که ام

در میان نفی و اثباتم مدام
نه بمن شد کار و نه بی من تمام

در میان این و آن درمانده ام
در یقین و در گمان درمانده ام

English translation

A villager went to the city of Merv, He slept in the middle of the Friday Mosque. A pumpkin was tied tightly to his foot, So that he wouldn't get lost in that city from the start. Another person untied it from his foot, Tied it to his own foot and slept next to him. When the man woke up, he saw with a weary heart, That this pumpkin was tied to that person's foot. He fell into bewilderment and became perplexed, He said, "O Lord, the villager has been lost! O God, if he is me, then what am I? And if he is me, wouldn't he say who I am? I am constantly between negation and affirmation, The matter is not resolved by me, nor completed without me. I am helpless between this and that, I am helpless in certainty and in doubt."
