Section 15 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

They asked Aristotle a secret: 'What do you know that, in a long life, is deservedly put in prison without any sin?' He said, 'That which is imprisoned by the teeth; that which must be imprisoned constantly is your tongue in the prison of the palate. Two gates of teeth and two gates of lips keep it closed every day and night, so that perhaps it may find rest for a moment, and yet its only work is restlessness. Whoever is silent has become steadfast; behold the honor of gold, which is silent (mute).' With whom shall I share the heart's pain when no one is left? Let me keep quiet, since not much of my life remains either. Since silence had all this great value, yet two motives impelled me to speech. Since my soul was intoxicated and restless, it could not draw a single breath without the pain of the work. If I had kept silent for a moment with my pure soul, a hundred destructions would have arisen from silence. Since eternity, as love became intimate with the soul, the passion of my love made me so talkative. Since I am senseless from the wine of love, how could silence ever be my lot? Would that my soul had rest, so that keeping silent would always be my task. What is conscious within my soul, I do not know if there is a path to it. Since I do not see my own companion in the world, I express my pain there. The other motive of mine was simply this: that this discourse of mine became a proof with every breath.
