از نیاز بندگی آن پادشاه
پیش مردی رفت از مردان راه

گفت پندی ده که رهبر باشدم
زین چنین صد ملک بهتر باشدم

گفت بنگر تا ترا ای شهریار
کار دنیا چند میآید بکار

کار دنیا آنچه باشد ناگزیر
آن قدر چون کرده شد آرام گیر

کار عقبی نیز بنگر این زمان
تا بعقبی چند محتاجی بدان

آنچه در عقبی ترا آن درخورست
کار آن کردن ترا لایق ترست

کار دین و کار دنیا روز وشب
تو بقدر احتیاج خود طلب

آنچت اینجا احتیاجست آن بکن
وانچه آنجا بایدت درمان بکن

گر بموئی بستگی باشد ترا
هم بموئی خستگی باشد ترا

ور بکوهی بستگی پیش آیدت
هم بکوهی خستگی بیش آیدت

بر تو هر پیوند تو بندی بود
تا ترا پیوند خود چندی بود

باز بر پیوند سر تا پای تو
تا توانی مرد ور نه وای تو

English translation

Out of a need for servitude, that king Went before a man of the spiritual path. He said, "Give me a counsel that may be my guide, That would be better for me than a hundred such kingdoms." He said, "Consider, O King, How much the affairs of this world are of use to you. Whatever worldly affair is unavoidable, Once that much is done, be at peace. Consider the affairs of the hereafter at this time as well; Know how much you will need the hereafter. Whatever is fitting for you in the hereafter, It is more worthy for you to work towards that. The affairs of religion and the world, day and night, Seek them only in proportion to your need. Whatever is necessary for you here, do that; And whatever you need there, seek its remedy. If you have an attachment as small as a hair, You will suffer affliction as small as a hair. And if an attachment as great as a mountain comes to you, You will suffer a greater affliction as large as a mountain. Upon you, every connection is a fetter; How long will you remain tied to your connections? Sever your attachments from head to toe, Be a man as much as you can, otherwise woe unto you."
