چون سکندر با حکیم و با خفیر
ماند اندر غار تاریکی اسیر

هیچکس البته ره نشناخت باز
جمله درماندند و شد کاری دراز

متفق گشتند آخر سر بسر
تا خری در پیش باشد راهبر

پیش در کردند خر تا راه برد
جمله را زآنجا به لشگرگاه برد

ای عجب ایشان حیکمان جهان
با خبر از سر پیدا و نهان

در چنان ره راهبرشان شد خری
تا به حکمت لاف نزند دیگری

چون نمود آن قوم را اسرار خویش
گفت ای بی حاصلان کار خویش

گرچه هر یک مرد پیش اندیش بود
از شما باری خری در پیش بود

چون خری از عاقلان افزون بود
دیگران را کاردانی چون بود

عقل اگر جاهل بود جانت برد
ور تکبر آرد ایمانت برد

عقل آن بهتر که فرمان بر شود
ورنه گر کامل شود کافر شود

English translation

When Alexander, along with a sage and a guard, remained captive in a dark cave, No one could find the way back at all; all were rendered helpless, and the ordeal dragged on. Finally, they all unanimously agreed that a donkey should go in front as a guide. They put the donkey forward so it could lead the way; it led everyone from there to the army camp. Oh, what a wonder! They were the philosophers of the world, aware of secrets both visible and hidden. On such a path, a donkey became their guide, so that no one else would boast of their wisdom! When He revealed His secrets to that group, He said: 'O you fruitless ones in your own endeavors! Even though each of you was a foresighted man, in the end, a donkey was ahead of you.' Since a donkey was superior to the wise men, how could others claim any competence? Intellect, if it is ignorant, will take your soul; and if it brings arrogance, it will take your faith. It is better for the intellect to be an obedient servant; otherwise, if it becomes absolute, it becomes an infidel.
