جاهلی میگفت احنف را متاب
گر یکی گوئی تو ده گویم جواب

احنفش گفتا تو گر گوئی دهم
من یکی باتو نگویم این بهم

خلق نبود این که تا یابی خبر
از فروتر کس شوی زیر و زبر

چون حقارت بر نتابی از حقیر
چون کشی پس کبریای آن کبیر

خلق چیست ز خلق خون نوشیدن است
باز ناپوشیدن و کوشیدن است

English translation

An ignorant man said to Ahnaf rebukingly: "If you say one word, I will answer with ten." Ahnaf replied to him, "If you say ten, I will not say even one back to you in return. This is not good character, so you may know, To become agitated and turned upside down by a lesser person. Since you cannot endure a slight from a lowly one, How then will you bear the majesty of that Great One? What is good character? It is drinking blood (enduring suffering) from the people, Keeping it concealed, and continually striving."
