داد محمود آن یکی را مال خویش
کرد او را سرور عمال خویش

رفت مرد و مال او جمله بخورد
بعد از آن در گوشهٔ بنشست فرد

شاه چون از کار او آگاه شد
گفت تا برخاست پیش شاه شد

شاه گفت ای بی خبر از حال من
از چه خوردی تو پلید این مال من

گفت بر پشتی آن خوردم که شاه
مال دارد بی قیاس اینجایگاه

من ندارم هیچ تو داری بسی
نیستی چون من تو محتاج کسی

چون بدان محتاج بودم خورده شد
کار بر پشتی فضلت کرده شد

گر ببخشی میتوانی من کیم
ور بگیری هم تو دانی من کیم

شاه را دل خوش شد از گفتار او
عفو کرد ودر گذشت از کار او

حجت دین گر سجل میبایدت
رحمتی دایم ز دل میبایدت

کم نهٔ آخر ز فرعون لعین
رحمتش بر زیردستان می ببین

English translation

Mahmud gave his wealth to a certain man, And made him the head of his officials. The man went and consumed all of his wealth, And after that, sat alone in a corner. When the king became aware of his deed, He ordered him to rise and come before the king. The king said, "O you ignorant of my state, Why did you, foul one, consume this wealth of mine?" He said, "I consumed it relying on the fact that the king Has boundless wealth in this place. I have nothing, and you have plenty; You are not, like me, in need of anyone. Since I was in need of it, it was consumed; The deed was done relying on your grace. If you forgive, you are able to; who am I? And if you seize me, you know best; who am I?" The king's heart was gladdened by his words; He pardoned him and overlooked his deed. If you need the decisive proof of faith, You need a constant mercy from the heart. You are not, after all, less than the accursed Pharaoh; Look upon his mercy toward his subordinates.
