بود مردی در سخاوت بی بدل
هرچه بودی خرج کردی بی خلل

مینداشت البته یک جو زر نگاه
گفت یک روزیش مردی نیک خواه

کای فلان آخر نترسی از هلاک
کان زمان کز تو برآید جان پاک

چون نمیداری نگه یک پیرهن
پس فراهم بایدت کردن کفن

گفت چون جانم برآید در پسی
وان کفن کدیه کنند از هر کسی

گر ز دروازه درآیم نیز من
پس شما بر سر زنیدم آن کفن

حرص مینگذاردت پاک ای پسر
تا پلید آئی تو درخاک ای پسر

دایما در خوی ناخوش ماندهٔ
وز صفات بد در آتش ماندهٔ

تا صفاتت باتو خواهد بود جمع
تو نخواهی بود بی سوزی چو شمع

English translation

There was a man unparalleled in generosity, Whatever he had, he would spend without hesitation. He would absolutely not save even a barleycorn of gold. One day, a well-wisher said to him: 'O such-and-such, do you not fear ruin after all, At that time when your pure soul departs from you? Since you do not save even a single shirt, Then you must provide for a shroud.' He said, 'When my soul departs at the end, And they will beg for that shroud from everyone, If I too come in through the gate, Then you can strike that shroud upon my head!' Greed will not leave you pure, O son, So that you go polluted into the earth, O son. You have permanently remained in an unpleasant disposition, And due to bad qualities you have remained in the fire. As long as your qualities are gathered with you, You will not be without burning, like a candle.
