Section 3 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

There was a thief who stole a great deal, Until the caliph finally hanged him on the gallows. By chance, Shibli happened to pass by that place, His eyes fell upon that upside-down state. Tears ran down his face over his affair, He let out a cry and ran to the gallows. He kissed his foot and departed, He placed his turban before him and departed. An inquirer asked him the secret of this, He said, "He was perfect in thievery. Out of his perfection, he stole a great deal, Until he sacrificed his life for this work. Whoever is complete in his own work, Will risk his life for his work, and that is all. Although he was an ignorant and heedless thief, Yet he was perfect in his own work. Since he turned out complete in his own work, For that reason, I placed my turban before him. When I saw the wooden gallows as his place, I gladly kissed his foot for it. He was a true man in his own work, Not like me, who am unmanly in my own pain. In manliness, he was the support of an army, Not like me, who turned out to be of cowardly essence. His life was worth but a barleycorn to him, Not like me, who trembled for my own life. A man must be, whether elite or commoner, One who is complete in his own art and work. If you desire a single atom of good name, You must have completeness in every work. In completeness, even if you do a bad work, You do that too for the sake of your own salvation."
