Section 9 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

One day the Prophet happened to pass by, While Umar was applying mud to a drainpipe. He passed him by and did not offer him a greeting; Immediately, Umar followed in his footsteps. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, what happened, That you turned away from Umar so very quickly?" He said, "You have become deluded by building, You do not have a particle of belief in death. You are undoubtedly striking the root of your soul, If you are plastering mud onto your drainpipe. Whoever must become dust in the grave, How can they make mud and not fear destruction? One must ultimately depart from the world, One must go beneath dust and blood. Until you are trampled by dust and blood, When will your bewilderment leave your head? If every particle of this dust were to become a tree, Every particle would bear a hundred pure souls. Who knows what wondrous souls Have plunged into this deep sea? Who knows what precious hearts Have turned to blood, and yours will too? Who knows what pure forms Have sunk beneath the dust amidst blood? In both worlds, the harvest is nothing but regret, No one has anything in their heart but regret. How can one sit comfortably in a house, From which we will soon have to arise? The affair of the world is nothing but a talisman and a twist, It is nothing but ruin upon ruin."
