Section 4 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

A king began to build a magnificent palace The master craftsman started the work Beside that palace, an old woman had a house Of all the world, she possessed only that ruin They told the king, "O master of perfection, If the hut of this old woman is removed, The palace will be a perfect square; buy it from her So that your palace appears perfectly square." The stern king summoned the old woman He said, "Selling this hut has become mandatory, So that this lofty palace becomes a square. Now you must pack your belongings and leave." The old woman said, "No, by God, do not say this! Do not speak of selling this building, O king! Even if the entire kingdom of the world becomes yours, How will the affairs of your greed ever find order? Whoever's worldly greed does not depart from their soul, How will their affairs be set right by this single hut? Abandon this and do not trouble me at all, So that you do not become ruined by my sigh." In short, the king waited one day, Until the old woman left that place. The king said, "Destroy that house, Level its four sides with the ground. Place whatever belongings she has on the road, And then lay the foundation of my palace." When the old woman finally returned from the road, She saw the king's palace in place of her hut, She saw her belongings thrown upon the road, And her hut made into the wall of the palace portico. A fire fell into the soul of that sorrowful woman, And from that fire, her eyes wept like a flood. With a heart full of sorrow caused by the king, She rubbed her face in the dust of the road, weeping bitterly. She said, "If I was not here, O God, You were not absent from this place! You remained silent while my hut of sorrows Was torn down without my permission." She said this, and with a wet face and dry lips, She drew a wondrous sigh from the depth of her soul. A tumult fell upon the sky because of it, And instantly, that foundation was overthrown by it. God Almighty destroyed that king, And swallowed him into the earth within his own palace. Practice justice in the kingdom like the wise, So that you do not become the mockery of fools.
