Section 19 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

When death approached a wayfarer, A trembling fell upon him like a leaf. He wept tears like a sorrowful cloud, And then, like fire, restlessly beat his hands. A questioner said to him, 'Why are you so overwhelmed? Why are you so anxious at such a time?' 'Bring your heart back to yourself and find peace, Gather yourself; do not die in this disheveled state.' He said, 'Tranquility is not possible for me at all, Because at this very moment, I am going before Someone To whom this world and the next, and existence and non-existence, Infidelity and Islam, and bad and good, are all one. For one to whom all of these are identical, Going before Him is not so easy! I am going before such a One; it is completely fitting If I fear, for fear here is indeed worthy. I am going before such a One; how would it be? Even if there were thousands of hearts, they would be filled with blood. How much can I think? My soul has burned, And from the heat of my soul, my tongue has burned. No one will answer my voice; Who will ever find the way to this secret? Out of fear of the dust, my strength and reason have turned to stone, The earth itself will not accept me due to my shame. Negligence has consumed my lifetime, what can I do? None of my deeds succeeded, what can I do? Having lost my lifetime in the game of this world, How can I go before the Creator?'
