Section 5 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

An illness became manifest in Mahmud; He was out of work due to unconsciousness for three days and nights. For three days and nights he did not stir from his place; His intellect departed, his body fallen and helpless. And wonder of wonders, when the right-knowing king Lost consciousness, Ayaz too had lost consciousness. On the fourth day, when the king became conscious, That slave woke up from his unconsciousness. When the king opened his eyes, He saw his Ayaz in that place. He said, 'When did you come, O slave?' He said, 'This very hour, O exalted one.' O beggar who seeks the company of the Sultan, So that you, empty-handed, may learn proper manners. Since you are a child of the Caliph of Truth, How can he leave you in a state of beggarliness? The vizier was present at his bedside; He said, 'O giver of crown and throne, It has been three days and nights that by the king's bedside He has been unconscious here just like the king. Neither have we seen a single movement from him, Nor have we heard a single word of speech from him. And then he says that he has just come? I am now coming out of this falsehood.' The king said to him, 'O lusterless slave, Why do you speak lies to me?' He said, 'There is never any path for falsehood in me, But since my existence is drowned in the King, When the King becomes unconscious, I become unconscious; When he returns to himself, I gain consciousness. I have no separate existence of my own; This speech is nothing but out of absolute sincerity. Since my existence is from the Monarch, How can my existence be manifest without him? The servant exists always through you and that is all, Who else is the servant but Mahmud and that is all?' Strive before death, O self-worshipper, To obtain a single speck of friendship. If a single speck of friendship is obtained by you, A sun will smile again in your heart.
