Section 4 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

There was an old woman with a bent back, Whose youth as beautiful as the moon had been slain. Before the mother, they brought back that boy On a shield, steeped in the blood of the heart. The old woman came in weakness, tearing her hair, Bareheaded, pulling her hair, Staining her face and garments with blood, Stirring a hundred uproars around herself. Although her back was bent like a bow, The arrow of her sigh passed through the heavens. Someone said to her: 'O old woman, Cover your face and cast a veil over your head, For this behavior is never proper.' The old woman instantly replied: 'O wretched one! If you had this fire burning in your heart, You would deem even more than this to be proper. Until my fire enters your own heart, This understanding of propriety will not be yours. Since you have not been the mother of a slain son, How could you ever mourn as I do? Since I see you are free from this pain, How can you know the suffering of the afflicted?'
