Section 5 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

There was a highly capable young man, Sharp-witted, clever, and very knowledgeable. From eagerness, he was constantly studying, From year to year, he only took two nights off. He had no business with all the people of the world, He had no work but writing and reviewing. His teacher's eyes were bright because of him, For in truth, he had turned out well for him. He favored him over his other students, And had a different way of speaking with him. His teacher had, behind the curtain, A slave girl like another sun. Narrow-eyed, a heart-stealing nourisher of the soul, World-adorning, of wondrous form. A form from head to foot entirely spirit, Grace upon grace and delight upon delight. By her sweetness she had bound sugar, By her bitterness she made every sour thing sweet. She had laid out a trap on the earth, Not that she had intentionally fallen so. From her two rubies, sugar poured out, Shedding the wings and feathers of parrots. From her two eyes, arrows shot forth, The slain, blood-stained, drowned in blood. The eyes of this student fell upon her face, He said, 'I am a student and she is a master. In the world, the teacher is no longer anyone to me, At this time, being a student to this idol is enough for me. If she teaches me the lesson of love as a master, I will fall on the path of the student. And if she will not teach the lesson of love again, I will not make any lesson either.' Day and night, he fell in love with that idol, He entirely abandoned his lessons and his teacher. He became like a branch of saffron from his pain, His yellow color became the color of safflower. His love came and cast his intellect down, If he had a heart, it grew tired of his soul. Although he had done much justice to knowledge, An atom of love cast it all to the wind. Reading science brings pride and clamor, Practicing love brings passion and madness. Whoever science gave a path to without love, His science gave him the love of wealth and status. Eventually, he became completely sick, Every joint of his became a house of sorrow. What had happened to him with the slave girl, The teacher finally became aware of it. Out of knowledge, he plotted with a trick, He bled the two hands of that slave girl. He gave her a purgative that took effect on her, After that, a menstruation appeared in her. That slave girl became like a branch of bamboo, Her pomegranate flower became like a saffron leaf. No goodness remained in her appearance, No freshness remained in her cheeks. Not a particle of her beauty remained, That goblet broke and that cupbearer remained not. About thirty bowls of medicine she had drunk, She had collected it all in one basin. The blood of phlebotomy and menstruation were also in the basin, Until that basin was full to the brim. The master called that clever student, And called the slave girl from behind the curtain. First, when he seated that student, He made that slave girl stand before him. When that young man saw her face, He did not look towards her again. He remained in wonder how that beautiful idol, Had become so deprived by fate. A coldness towards her appeared in him, The warmth of studying came into action. All his sickness turned to wind, He became eternally free from the slave girl. When the teacher saw his freedom, His joy overcame his sorrow. The warmth of the clever student turned cold, His soul became separated from the love of the slave girl. He told them to bring that basin quickly, They quickly brought it uncovered before him. He said, 'O young man, what has happened to you? You became restless and lost your peace. Where is all that warmth of your heart in love? And where is all that impudence and shamelessness? Day and night, this slave girl was your desire, Raise your head, here is your desire. Why did your face turn yellow from her love? And why did such a love become so cold? You are the same and the slave girl is too, But only this one thing has diminished from her. That which has diminished from her face away from you, Look, this basin is full of it from her. Since all this separated from the slave girl, Your love has become this cold now. You were measuring wind over the slave girl, In truth, you were a lover of this. You came on the path without insight, You came as a lover of blood and filth.' Immediately that student became a man of action, He repented and went back to reviewing. 'Since you came as a porter of filth, Why did you come to the seat of leadership? Whether your work is to rule a kingdom, Or your path is to study the science of religion. Since your work is for the sake of the ego, Your value does not surpass that of a dog.'
