Section 9 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

One day Solomon said, 'O God, Bring Iblis to the right path for me, So that, like every demon, he obeys my command, And readily bows his head before me.' The Truth (God) said to him, 'Do not intercede for him, I will make him obedient to your command.' Eventually, Iblis became his subject, And wondrously became like wind at the dust of his door. Even though Solomon had so much authority, That his dominion stretched from the earth to the divine throne, Because he recognized the value of poverty and humility, He made his living by weaving baskets. One day his servant went to the market, To sell his basket. Though he wandered much back and forth, In the end, no one bought that basket. He returned and brought it back to him; Solomon's hunger grew prolonged. The next day he wove another, better one, Hoping that he might find a buyer. The servant took both, but there was no market, He wandered until night, and there was no buyer. Since no buyer appeared, In short, much weakness became apparent. From lack of food, Solomon became pained, Weakness overtook his pure soul. God Almighty said to him, 'What is the matter then, That living has become so difficult for you from weakness?' He said, 'I need bread, O Creator.' God said, 'Eat bread, how long will you be restless?' He said, 'O Lord, look, I have no bread.' God said, 'Sell your goods and buy bread.' He said, 'I have sent my baskets many times, But right now, I have no buyer.' God said, 'Why would the market need your basket, When you have enslaved the master of the market? Without a doubt, when Satan is imprisoned by you, All the affairs of the world become obliterated. When the foul Iblis is in chains, How can anyone make a sale or a purchase? The affairs of the world are entirely dependent on him, His driving the worldly hustle is what keeps it running.'
