بایزید از خانه میآمد پگاه
اوفتاد آنجا سگی با او براه

شیخ حالی جامه را در هم گرفت
زانکه سگ را سخت نامحرم گرفت

سگ زفان حال بگشاد آن زمان
گفت اگر خشکم مکش از من عنان

ورترم هفت آب و یک خاک ای سلیم
صلح اندازد میان ما مقیم

گر تو را سهل است با من زان چه باک
کار تو با تست کاری خوفناک

گر بخود دامن زنی یک ذره باز
پس ز صد دریا کنی غسل نماز

زآن جنابت هم نگردی هیچ پاک
پاک میگردی ز من از آب و خاک

اینکه تو دامن ز من داری نگاه
جهد کن کز خویشتن داری نگاه

شیخ گفتش ظاهری داری پلید
هست آن در باطن من ناپدید

عزم کن تا هر دو یک منزل کنیم
بو کز آنجا پاکئی حاصل کنیم

گر دوجا آب نجس بر هم شود
چون بدو قله رسد محرم شود

همرهی کن ای بظاهر باطنم
تا شود از پاکی دل ایمنم

سگ بدو گفت ای امام راهبر
من نشایم همرهی را در گذر

زآنکه من رد جهانم این زمان
وآنگهی هستی تو مقبول جهان

هرکرا بینم مرا کوبی رسد
با لگد یا سنگ یا چوبی رسد

هر کرا بینی تو گردد خاک تو
شکر گوید ز اعتقاد پاک تو

از پی فردای خود تا زاده ام
استخوانی خویش را ننهاده ام

تو مگر شکاک راه افتادهٔ
لاجرم گندم دو خم بنهادهٔ

تا بود گندم مگر فردات را
سر نمیگردد چنین سودات را

شیخ کاین بشنود مشتی آه کرد
روی و ره نه روی سوی راه کرد

گفت چون من مینشایم زابلهی
تا کنم با یک سگ او همرهی

همرهی لایزال و لم یزل
چون توانم کرد با چندین خلل

تا که میماند من ومائی ترا
روی نبود ایمنی جائی ترا

چون ز ما و من برون آئی تمام
هر دو عالم کل تو باشی والسلام

English translation

Bayazid came out of his house early in the morning, A dog happened to join him on the path. The Sheikh immediately gathered up his robe, Because he considered the dog extremely impure. The dog opened its tongue of circumstance at that time, Saying, "If I am dry, do not pull back your reins from me. And if I am wet, seven waters and one earth, O flawless one, Will cast a permanent peace between us. If your affair with me is easy, then what fear is there? Your affair is with yourself, a fearful affair. If you pull your skirt back from yourself even a tiny bit, Then even if you do the prayer ablution from a hundred oceans, You will not become clean at all from that impurity. You become clean from me by water and earth; Since you keep your skirt away from me, Strive to keep yourself away from yourself." The Sheikh said to it, "You have an impure exterior, While that is hidden within my interior. Resolve that we make a single dwelling together, So that perhaps we may attain purity from that. If two impure waters join together, When it reaches two qullas, it becomes pure. Accompany me, O you whose exterior is my interior, So that I may become secure from the purity of heart." The dog said to him, "O guiding Imam, I am not fit for companionship on the way. Because I am the rejected of the world at this time, While you are the accepted of the world. Whoever I see, a blow comes to me, By a kick, a stone, or a stick. Whoever you see becomes dust before you, Saying thanks for your pure faith. For my tomorrow, since I was born, I have not stored away a single bone of my own. But you, perhaps, have become a doubter on the path, For you have inevitably stored two jars of wheat. So that there might be wheat for your tomorrow; Your head does not turn from such thoughts." When the Sheikh heard this, he sighed deeply, He turned his face and way, not heading toward the road. He said, "Since I am unworthy out of foolishness, To be a companion with a dog, How can I be a companion of the Eternal and Everlasting, With so many flaws? As long as 'I' and 'we' remain with you, You will not have a face of security anywhere. When you step completely out of 'us' and 'I', You will be the entirety of both worlds, and that is all."
