بامدادی بود محمود از پگاه
برنشست از بهر حربی با سپاه

موج میزد لشکرش از کشورش
جمع بود از چند کشور لشکرش

قرب پانصد پیل در زنجیر داشت
عالمی القصه دار و گیر داشت

دید در کنجی یکی دیوانه مست
شد پیاده شاه و پیش او نشست

کرد دیوانه ز پیش و پس نگاه
عالمی میدید پر پیل و سپاه

کرد حالی روی سوی آسمان
گفت شاهی زو درآموز این زمان

گفت محمودش مگو این زینهار
گفت آخر چون کنم ای شهریار

کی کنی تو خاصه با پیل و سپاه
از پی جنگ گدائی عزم راه

بلکه گر شاهی ترا آید بجنگ
تو بسازی جنگ او هم بیدرنگ

پادشاه با پادشاه جنگی کند
نه بیاید با گدا جنگی کند

حق ترا تنها چنین بگذاشتست
پس به سلطانیت سر افراشتست

وآمده با من بجنگ آویخته
من چنین از دست او بگریخته

فارغست از شاهی تو ای عجب
با گدائی می برآید روز و شب

با من بیچاره میکوشد مدام
من زبون تر آمدستم والسلام

چون شود از درد دلشان بیقرار
دل بپردازند خوش از کردگار

English translation

One morning, Mahmud, at early dawn, Mounted his horse for a battle with his army. His army surged from his realm, His army was gathered from several countries. He had nearly five hundred chained elephants, In short, he possessed a world of tumult and clamor. He saw a drunk madman in a corner, The king dismounted and sat before him. The madman looked back and forth, Saw a world full of elephants and army. He immediately turned his face to the sky, He said, 'Learn kingship from him now!' Mahmud said to him, 'Do not say this, beware!' He said, 'After all, what should I do, O king? When do you, especially with an elephant and army, Resolve to travel for a war against a beggar? Rather, if a king comes to battle you, You prepare for his battle without delay. A king fights with a king, He does not come to fight with a beggar. God has left you alone like this, Then raised your head to kingship, And He has come and engaged in battle with me, While I am fleeing from Him like this. It is strange that He is free from your kingship, He spends day and night with a beggar. He constantly strives with poor me, I have become weaker, and that is all. When their hearts become restless from pain, They gladly clear their hearts for the Creator.'
