بود اندر خدمت سلطان کسی
کرده بود او خدمت سلطان بسی

خواندش یک روز شاه حق شناس
گفت کردی خدمت ما بی قیاس

چون تو حاجتمندی و من پادشاه
هرچه میخواهی ازین حضرت بخواه

گفت چون حاضر بوددربار عام
هم وزیر و هم امیر و هم امام

هم بگرد شاه گرد آید سپاه
هم جهانی خلق پیش آید زراه

بر سر آن جمله خلق بیشمار
پیش خویشم خوان و سر در گوشم آر

یک سخن با من بگو چه کژ چه راست
گر همه دشنام باشد آن رواست

تا درین حضرت بدانندم همه
راز دار شاه خوانندم همه

هرچه زان حضرت رسد چه بد چه نیک
بد نباشد این بنتوان گفت لیک

گرچه زیر پای گردی پست او
یادگاری بایدت از دست او

English translation

There was someone in the service of the Sultan, Who had served the Sultan abundantly. One day the truth-knowing king called him, And said, 'You have served us beyond measure. Since you are in need and I am the king, Ask for whatever you want from this presence.' He said, 'When the public court is present, With the vizier, the commander, and the Imam, When the army gathers around the king, And a world of people comes from the path, Before all that countless crowd, Call me to yourself and bring your head to my ear. Speak one word to me, whether false or true, Even if it is entirely an insult, it is acceptable. So that in this court, everyone will know me, And all will call me the confidant of the king.' Whatever comes from that presence, whether bad or good, Is not bad; one cannot say but this: Even if you are laid low beneath his feet, You must have a keepsake from his hand.
