Section 8 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

That person took Zulfiqar from Haydar, But he was unable to put it to work. At last, he brought that Zulfiqar back, And went on at length finding fault with it. Haydar said to him: 'For Zulfiqar, The arm of the relentless attacker is needed at the time of action. Unless the strength of Haydar is readily present, The work of the precious sword is in vain. How can your affair be set right by Zulfiqar? You should have asked me for Ali's strength.' Whoever thinks that another book like this one Can be brought into manifestation from behind the veil, Tell them: 'Do not waste your life in ignorance, For Zulfiqar requires the strength of Haydar.' O wonder! Upon the water, the Glorious Throne Became exalted by poetry like Farid's water-like verse. No one will ever possess this style until eternity; Even the Tuba tree of Paradise does not bear this fruit. The water of every meaning is so clear to me That whatever I desire is entirely in my hand. Thank God, I do not need to go by force, Like Ferdowsi, into the oven for a single verse. Like Noah, water comes to me naturally, Because the deluge comes to me from the oven. When the deluge arrives with force from my oven, There is no need at all to go into the oven. Like Ferdowsi, I shall open beer; And like Sana'i, I shall open it without greed. With these words that are my seal today, It is clear that no one is my equal. Even the sun itself took its bright spring From my Persian Psalms. May everyone be deprived of my Psalms except three kinds of people: The subtle-minded, the beautiful scribe, and the one with David's throat. If you have a beautiful voice, set the world boiling; Otherwise, you know what to do: sit in silence. And if you understand it well, you have triumphed; Otherwise, go and learn weaving! And if you write beautifully, write on; Otherwise, sit and be a bowl-licker with that finger. No one shall have this path until the Day of Resurrection; Contemplate, read beautifully, and do not hasten, O friend! Though every bird boasts of this style, Not every winged creature is the Simurgh of Mount Qaf. Everyone in their corner boasts of their breath, But they rarely breathe a breath like Jesus. Everyone has a face, But Joseph is unique, and others are different. Everyone has become proud of their fine voice, But this is sealed upon the owner of the Psalms. That which the Sufi calls 'it' by name, Was sealed upon Muhammad, and peace be upon him. My name is Muhammad, and I too Have sealed this style just as Muhammad did, O dear one! Wisdom and poetry that are not innate Do not turn out well; they are merely nonsensical words. If spiritual taste is born with you from your mother's milk, Your poetry will be sweeter than sugar. But if you lack it and force yourself, You only expose your own limitations.
