Section 8 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

Moses of Amran was going toward Mount Sinai He saw an ascetic on the path, immersed in light He said, O Moses, tell the Creator That what You said has been done, bring mercy After that, when he went further from there He saw a lover, more intoxicated than him He said, tell God that this one without core or skin Is Your lover, You hold him as a friend Eventually, when Moses reached that place He saw a mad-hearted one ahead on the path Barefoot and bareheaded and insolent-like He said, right now tell the Creator How much more melancholy will You give me? I have no capacity for more wretchedness than this My soul has reached my lips from sorrow The day of my joy has turned to night I have forsaken You, O Dear One You can also forsake me Since the madman's words were not proper Moses had no answer for him at all When the resourceful Interlocutor arrived at Sinai He spoke and heard, and when he was returning He told the story of that ascetic and lover God gave a fitting answer for both of them He said, that ascetic is for mercy For the lover, love is the portion The goal of both is achieved here Whatever they want from Us is achieved Moses prostrated and was returning The Almighty God said, what is the other secret? You have hidden the story of the madman You have committed a fault in this message He said, O Lord, those words are better kept hidden Even though You know, it is better unsaid How can I open my lips with that message Because here it is a breach of etiquette God told him, give his answer back Call out to him from Us Say, God tells you, O restless one If you speak of forsaking the Creator I will never speak of forsaking you Whether you turn your head away from Me or not The story of madmen is one of liberation All of it is boldness and distress That which a heartless one carelessly says How could a sane person ever say it?
