گفت هارون عشق مجنون میشنود
آن هوس او را چو مجنون در ربود

خواست تا دیدار لیلی بیند او
پیش لیلی یک نفس بنشیند او

خواست لیلی را و چون کردش نگاه
سهل آمد روی او در چشم شاه

خواند مجنون را و گفت ای بیخبر
نیست لیلی را جمالی بیشتر

تو چنین مست جمال او شدی
وز جنونی درجوال او شدی

ترک او گیر و مدارش نیز دوست
زانکه بر هم نیم ترکی صد چو اوست

گفت تو کی دیدی آن رخسار را
عشق مجنون باید آن دیدار را

تا نیاید عشق مجنونی پدید
کی شود لیلی بخاتونی پدید

نیست نقصان در جمال آن نگار
هست نقصان در نظر ای شهریار

گر بچشم من ببینی روی او
توتیا سازی ز خاک کوی او

زشت بادا روی لیلی در جهان
تا بماند خوبی او در نهان

زشت اگر ننماید او ای پادشاه
پس شود خلق جهان مجنون راه

بود نابینا بسی در هر پسی
لیک چون یعقوب بایستی کسی

تا چو بوی پیرهن پیدا شود
چشمش از بوئی چنان بینا شود

گر توانی ای امیرالمؤمنین
جاودانم دیدهٔ ده دور بین

تا بدان دیده ز یک یک ذره چیز
نقد بینم روی لیلی جمله نیز

English translation

Harun would hear of Majnun's love, That desire carried him away like Majnun. He wished to see Layla's face, And to sit before Layla for a moment. He summoned Layla, and when he looked at her, Her face appeared ordinary in the king's eyes. He called Majnun and said, 'O ignorant one! Layla does not possess much beauty. You have become so intoxicated by her beauty, And out of madness, you have fallen into her snare. Abandon her and hold her no longer as a beloved, For there are a hundred like her for half a Turk.' He [Majnun] said, 'When have you ever seen that face? One needs Majnun's love for that vision. Until Majnun-like love appears, How can Layla appear as a queen? There is no defect in the beauty of that idol; The defect is in the vision, O King! If you were to see her face with my eyes, You would make collyrium from the dust of her street. May Layla's face be ugly in the world, So that her beauty remains hidden. If she does not appear ugly, O King, Then the people of the world would become madmen on the path. There were many blind people behind every door, But someone like Jacob was needed, So that when the scent of the shirt appears, His eyes would gain sight from such a scent. If you can, O Commander of the Faithful, Give me eternally far-seeing eyes, So that with those eyes, from every single atom, I may clearly see the face of Layla in its entirety.'
