چون سکندر را مسخر شد جهان
وقت مرگ او درآمد ناگهان

گفت تابوتی کنید از بهر من
دخمهٔ سازید پیش شهر من

کف گشاده دست من بیرون کنید
نوحه بر من هر زمان افزون کنید

تا زمال و لشکر و ملک و شهی
خلق میبینند دست من تهی

گر جهان در دست من بودآن زمان
در تهی دستی برفتم از جهان

ملک و مال این جهان جز پیچ نیست
گر همه یابی چو من جز هیچ نیست

English translation

When Alexander conquered the world, The time of his death suddenly arrived. He said: 'Make a coffin for my sake, Build a crypt before my city. Extend my hands out with open palms, Increase the lamentation for me at every moment; So that of wealth, armies, kingdom, and kingship, The people may see my hands empty. Even if the world was in my hand at that time, I departed from the world empty-handed. The kingdom and wealth of this world are nothing but a complication, Even if you gain it all, like me, it is nothing at all.'
