در رهی می شد سنایی بی قرار
دید کناسی شده مشغول کار

سوی دیگر چون نظر افکند باز
یک مؤذن دید در بانگ نماز

گفت نیست این کار خالی از خلل
هر دو را می بینم اندر یک عمل

زآنکه هست این بی خبر چون آن دگر
از برای یک دو من نان کارگر

چون برای نان است کار این دو خام
هر دو را یک کار می بینم مدام

بلکه این کناس در کار است راست
وآن مؤذن غرهٔ روی و ریا ست

پس درین معنی بلاشک ای عزیز
از مؤذن به بود کناس نیز

تا تو با نفسی و شیطانی ندیم
پیشه خواهی داشت کناسی مقیم

گر درخت دیو از دل برکنی
جانت را زین بند مشکل برکنی

ور درخت دیو می داری به جای
با سگ و با دیو باشی هم سرا ی

English translation

Sanai was walking restlessly on a path, He saw a sweeper busy at work. When he cast his glance to the other side again, He saw a muezzin calling to prayer. He said, 'This matter is not free from flaw, I see both of them engaged in the same action. Because this unaware one is just like the other, Working for the sake of a few maunds of bread. Since the work of both these raw men is for bread, I see both of them doing the exact same work constantly. Rather, this sweeper is honest in his work, While that muezzin is full of hypocrisy and ostentation. Therefore, in this sense, undoubtedly, O dear one, The sweeper is even better than the muezzin. As long as you are a companion to the ego and Satan, You will have the permanent profession of a sweeper. If you uproot the tree of the demon from your heart, You will free your soul from this difficult bond. And if you keep the tree of the demon in place, You will be sharing a home with the dog and the demon.'
