Section 3 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

An unaware man was going to the desert on a snowy day He saw a man from among the wondrous men It was snowing, and that great man was passing by Scattering seeds in the desert and plain In his warmth, he was scattering snow like fire Scattering sweet seeds for the little birds The unaware man said to him, 'O most ignorant one, It is not the time for sowing, this will not bear fruit. In such a season, who sows a seed? And if someone sows, he is a madman.' The man told him, 'What should I say? This is not ugly, This is cultivation, and other than this, there is no cultivation. My time of sowing is now, O son, If you do not recognize it, it is madness, O son. This land in which I cast this seed, I irrigate it with my tears. I will reap it when its time comes, And I will thresh it on the threshing floor. How long will you be raw? Where is the burning? How long the darkness of night? Where is the day? O you whose prayer has become non-prayer, Your pure devotion has become a game. Since your prayer is so distracted, Abandon it, for this is not performance, this is deception.'
