در رهی میرفت محمود از پگاه
در میان راه خلقی دید شاه

آن یکی را زار میآویختند
سرنگون از دار میآویختند

چون نظر افتاد بر وی شاه را
خواست او مر عزم کردن راه را

مرد حالی بانگ زد از زیر دار
گفت میبینند خلقم ده هزار

هم تو میبینی مرا ای دادگر
نیست فرقی زین نظر تا آن نظر

چون نظر از پادشاه آید پدید
نیست ممکن گر گناه آید پدید

آن سخن محمود را دلشاد کرد
لاجرم دادش دیت و آزاد کرد

چون کشنده گشت فارغ از گناه
دست محکم کرد در فتراک شاه

شاه گفتش چون برستی از خطر
پای در ره نه چه میخواهی دگر

گفت من زینجا کجادانم شدن
یک زمان دور از تو نتوانم شدن

گفت ای احمق ترا با من چکار
گفت من خود با تودارم کار وبار

زانکه من آزاد کرد خسروم
از کرم تو دادهٔ جانی نوم

از خودم گر دور گردانی بزور
زنده انگارم که در کردی بگور

ورنه گرمی دی بگو بخشیدهٔ خون
تادر آویزند از دارم نگون

هرکه شد آزاد کرد خاص تو
بد نبیند نیز از اخلاص تو

من کنون آزاد کرد این درم
تا که جان دارم از این درنگذرم

English translation

Mahmud was walking on a path early in the morning In the middle of the way, the king saw a crowd They were miserably hanging a person Hanging him upside down from the gallows When the king's glance fell upon him He wanted to resolve to continue on his way The man immediately cried out from under the gallows Saying, 'Ten thousand people are watching me You too are watching me, O just one Is there no difference between this look and that look? When a glance from a king appears It is impossible for sin to remain visible' Those words made Mahmud's heart glad Inevitably, he paid his blood money and set him free When the murderer became free from sin He took firm hold of the king's saddle straps The king said to him, 'Since you escaped from danger Set foot on the path, what else do you want?' He said, 'Where do I know to go from here? I cannot be far from you for a moment' He said, 'O fool, what business do you have with me?' He said, 'I indeed have business and affairs with you Because I am a freedman of the monarch By your generosity you have given me a new soul If you drive me away from yourself by force I will consider that you have buried me alive in a grave Otherwise, if you send me away, take back the blood money So that they may hang me upside down from the gallows Whoever became your special freedman Will not see evil from your sincerity I am now a freedman of this door As long as I have a soul, I will not pass from this door'
