Section 4 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

Majnun settled in a wilderness; it was a time of a severe winter. Unaware of all else, he had kindled a fire, and his heart grew warmer, even warmer than the flame. Someone arrived from the presence of Layla and said, 'O you who have been separated from your beloved, what news do you have of Layla? Tell me, I am no stranger, reveal the secret to me.' He replied, 'This is the news I have: that silver-bodied one is unaware of my dying agony.' Saying this, he grasped the burning embers in his hand, until the embers all turned to ashes.
