Section 7 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

There was a dervish whose house was empty, A thief entered, and the dervish became aware. He searched everywhere to see if there was anything, But nothing except wind came into his hands. He said a hundred times "La hawl" (There is no power) for his trouble, And because of this, the dervish began to laugh. The thief said to him, "With such an empty house, How can you laugh? You are a great fool. With such a house, the likes of which is rare in the world, This is no place for laughter, it is a place for mourning." Out of ignorance, you call yourself a brave man, Because you have only seen a painted lion on a bathhouse wall. When the roar of a lion emerges from the forest, The coward is distinguished from the brave man. How can the newly created exist on the eternal path? How can an effeminate man do the work of Rostam? When the sun of that Beauty shines forth, How can you be weighed, sweating in your illusions? When the traceless Beauty manifests itself, To the first and the last for all eternity, It plunges its head into the infinite sea, And then raises its head from that sea. Amidst this foam and this smoke, Since you will not remain, who will you be? In the end, you must depart after all, Unaware of your conclusion and your origin. Neither from the first moment is the beginning visible, Nor from the last atom is the end visible. I am between this and that, neither this nor that, Unaware of body and soul, neither this nor that. Disbelief is foundational and faith is weak, The ego is dominant, the body strong, the soul weak. 'What should I do, what should I do' became overwhelming, Bewilderment appeared, and love became his companion. At this moment, I am in bewilderment and regret, Even a featherless ant provokes my jealousy. I do not know where this 'I do not know' comes from, Where the asceticism of reason and the love of my soul come from. I know nothing so long as I have known, And if I know everything, from where have I known it? The very essence of my knowledge is ignorance, My total ignorance is sheer bewilderment. All my bewilderment is freezing numbness, And all this freezing numbness comes from death. If the dead were given faith as their life, And the daughter of Jamshid without a dowry, Drinking water would still be poison for a man with dropsy, Especially if his dropsy is accompanied by consumption.
