کرد عمرو قیس را مردی سؤال
گفت اگر فردا خدای ذوالجلال
سر بدوزخ در دهد ناگه ترا
در چه شغلی ره بود آنگه ترا
گفت برگیرم عصا و رکوهٔ
میزنم در گرد دوزخ خطوهٔ
زار میگویم که این زندان اوست
وین سزای آنکه اورا داشت دوست
دید آن شب حق تعالی را بخواب
کرد عمرو قیس را حالی خطاب
گفت هان ای بدگمان خلق آفرین
کی کند با دوستان خود چنین
دوستان آید بفردوسم دریغ
کی ز دوزخشان نهم بر حلق تیغ
English translation
A man asked Amr-e Qais a question, Saying, 'If tomorrow the God of Majesty Suddenly casts you headlong into Hell, What occupation would you take up then?' He said, 'I will take up my staff and water-jug, And I will step around the perimeter of Hell. I will weep bitterly saying, This is His prison, And this is the reward of the one who loved Him!' That night he saw God Almighty in a dream, Who immediately addressed Amr-e Qais, Saying, 'Beware, O cynical creature of the Creator! When does He do such a thing to His friends? My friends shall come to My Paradise, alas, When would I place the sword of Hell upon their throats?'
