در بر دیوانهٔ شد عاقلی
دید آن دیوانه را غمگین دلی

گفت غمگین از کهٔ گفت از خدای
کز غم او می ندانم سر ز پای

میبترسم زو و گر دیدن بود
جمله را زو روی ترسیدن بود

چون نترسند از کسی خلقان همه
کو چو گرگان را دهد سر در رمه

تا شبان بنشیند و ماتم کند
چه عجب گر از چنین کس غم کند

کرد امروزم چنین شوریده دین
تا چه خواهد کرد با من بعد ازین

ای عجب دیوانه نیز از بیم او
میکند چون عاقلان تسلیم او

بیم او چون دل شکافی میکند
عقل را از عقل صافی میکند

تا زهیبت عقل مجنون میرود
وز جنون خویش در خون میرود

English translation

A sane man came before a madman, He saw that madman with a sorrowful heart. He asked, 'From whom are you sorrowful?' He replied, 'From God, Because of sorrow for Him, I do not know my head from my feet. I fear Him, and if one were to truly see, Everyone would have reason to fear Him. Why shouldn't all the people fear someone, Who lets wolves loose into the flock, So that the shepherd sits and mourns? What wonder is it if one feels sorrow from such a person? He made my faith so disturbed today, What will He do with me after this?' Oh, wonder! The madman too, out of fear of Him, Submits to Him just like the sane ones. When His fear cleaves the heart, It purifies the intellect from the intellect itself. So that from awe, the intellect goes mad, And from its own madness, it perishes in blood.
