سائلی پرسید از آن شوریده حال
گفت اگر نام مهین ذوالجلال

می شناسی بازگوی ای مرد نیک
گفت نان است این بنتوان گفت لیک

مرد گفتش احمقی و بی قرار
کی بود نام مهین نان، شرم دار

گفت در قحط نشابور ای عجب
می گذشتم گرسنه چل روز و شب

نه شنودم هیچ جا بانگ نماز
نه دری بر هیچ مسجد بود باز

من بدانستم که نان نام مهینست
نقطهٔ جمعیت و بنیاد دینست

از پی نان نیستت چون سگ قرار
حق چو رزقت می دهد تو حق گزار

حق چو رزقت داد و کارت کرد راست
تو بخور وز کس مپرس این از کجاست

English translation

A beggar asked that ecstatic one, Saying, 'If you know the Greatest Name of the Lord of Majesty, Reveal it, O good man.' He said, 'It is bread, though this cannot easily be said.' The man said to him, 'You are foolish and restless! When was the Greatest Name ever bread? Have some shame!' He said, 'During the famine of Nishapur, how strange! I was passing by, hungry for forty days and nights. I heard the call to prayer nowhere, Nor was the door of any mosque open. I realized then that bread is the Greatest Name, The point of unity and the foundation of religion. For the sake of bread you have no rest, like a dog; When the Truth provides your sustenance, be grateful to Him. When the Truth provides your sustenance and makes your affairs right, Eat, and do not ask anyone where it comes from.'
