گفت دزدی را گرفت آن سر فراز
در میان جمع دستش کرد باز

دزد نه دم زد از آن نه آه کرد
برگرفت آن دست و عزم راه کرد

همچنان خاموش میبرید راه
تا رباطی بود رفت آنجایگاه

چون رسید آنجاخروشی درگرفت
ناله و فریاد و جوشی در گرفت

در فغان آمد بصد زاری زار
وز نفیر خویشتن شد بی قرار

سایلی گفتش تو با چندین خروش
زیر دار آخر چرا بودی خموش

گفت آنجا هیچ همدردم نبود
دست ببریده یکی مردم نبود

گر من آنجا سخت میجوشیدمی
یا بصد فریاد بخروشیدمی

گر بسی فریاد بودی آن همه
خلق را چون باد بودی آن همه

لیک اینجا یک بریده دست هست
کس چه داند او بداند درد دست

لاجرم گر پیش او نالم رواست
کو بداند نالهٔ من از کجاست

تا نیاید هیچ همدردی پدید
نالهٔ همدرد نتواند شنید

ذرهٔ این درد اگر برخیزدت
دل بصد درد دگر برخیزدت

گر شود این درد دامنگیر تو
بس بود این درد دایم پیر تو

ور نگیرد دامنت این درد زود
گفت و گوی این ندارد هیچ سود

English translation

He said that exalted one caught a thief, In the midst of the crowd, his hand was severed. The thief neither breathed a word nor sighed, He took that hand and set out on his way. He continued on his way in silence, Until he reached a hospice. When he arrived there, a cry broke out, Wailing and shouting and a stir began. He fell to weeping with a hundred bitter groans, And from his own lamentation, he became restless. A beggar asked him: 'With all this outcry, Why were you silent under the gallows?' He said: 'There, I had no fellow-sufferer, There was not one person with a severed hand. If I had boiled intensely there, Or if I had shouted with a hundred cries, Though there were many cries, To the people, it would all be like wind. But here, there is one severed hand, Who knows? He knows the pain of the hand. Therefore, if I lament before him, it is proper, For he knows where my lamentation comes from. Until no fellow-sufferer appears, The lament of the fellow-sufferer cannot be heard. If an atom of this pain rises in you, Your heart will rise with a hundred other pains. If this pain takes hold of your hem, This pain will be enough to be your eternal guide. And if this pain does not seize your hem soon, Talking about it will be of no use.'
