عامربن قیس قطب نه فلک
ترهٔ یک روز می زد بر نمک

پس خوشی میخورد بی نان تره او
مینشد از جای خود یک ذره او

سایلی گفتش که ای مرد بلند
گشتهٔ آخر بدین تره پسند

عامرش گفتا که در عالم بسی
قانعند الحق بکم زین هم بسی

گفت کیست آخر بگو از مردمان
کو بکم زین هست قانع این زمان

گفت دنیا هرکه بر عقبی گزید
شد بکم زین غره چون دنیا گزید

زانکه دنیا در بر دین ذره ای ست
صد هزاران ذره در هر تره ای ست

پس کسی کو کرد دنیا اختیار
گشت قانع او بکم زین صد هزار

چون بکم زین می نشاید غره بود
پس ز دنیا بیشتر در تره بود

آنچه بیشست از همه دنیا مراست
گر خورم بیش از همه دنیا رواست

هرکه در راه قناعت مرد شد
ملک عالم بر دل او سرد شد

خشک یا تر گرده چون زد بر پنیر
فارغ آمد از وزیر و از امیر

English translation

Aamir bin Qays, the pole of the nine heavens, One day was dipping a leek into salt. Then he happily ate the leek without bread, He did not move a single atom from his place. A questioner asked him, 'O exalted man, Have you finally become content with this leek?' Aamir told him, 'In the world, there are many, Who are truly content with much less than this.' He asked, 'Tell me who, after all, among people, Who is content with less than this at this time?' He said, 'Whoever chose this world over the hereafter, Became deceived by less than this, as he chose this world. Because this world, compared to religion, is but an atom, A hundred thousand atoms are in every leek. So whoever made the world his choice, Became content with a hundred thousand times less than this. Since it is not fitting to be deceived by less than this, Then in a leek, there is more than the world. That which is more than the whole world is mine, If I eat more than the whole world, it is fitting.' Whoever becomes a true man on the path of contentment, The kingdom of the world becomes cold to his heart. Whether dry or fresh, when he dips his loaf in cheese, He becomes free from the minister and the emir.
