آن جوانی بود الحق بی خبر
رفت پیش شیخ حلوائی مگر

گفت من عمری بخون گردیده ام
بی سر و بن سرنگون گردیده ام

هم ریاضتها کشیدم بیشمار
هم شب و هم روز بودم بیقرار

نه بدیدم هیچ در عمری دراز
نه رسیدم من بهیچی مانده باز

شیخ گفتش تو غلط کردی مگر
کانچه جستی یافتی جان پدر

تو بهر کاری که رؤیت داشتی
یافتی چون کار آن پنداشتی

آنچه تو جوئی درین ره آن دهند
کفر ورزی کی ترا ایمان دهند

خواجه بس کورست و ناقد بس بصیر
هرچه خواهی برد خواهد گفت گیر

گر نخواهی برد چشمی زین جهان
کور میری کور خیزی جاودان

هر زمان زخمی زنی برجان خود
درد میدانی مگر درمان خود

یک نفس گوئی غم جان نیستت
هر نفس جز ماتم نان نیستت

آنچه آدم را ز گندم اوفتاد
عقل را از نفس مردم اوفتاد

یاد کرد نفس را در هر نفس
گوئیا نام مهین نانست و بس

English translation

There was a young man, in truth unaware, Who went, perhaps, to Sheikh Halva'i. He said, 'I have spent a lifetime turning in blood, And have been overturned, without head or foot. I have also undergone countless ascetic disciplines, And both night and day I was restless. Yet I saw nothing in a long lifetime, Nor did I attain anything, remaining left behind.' The Sheikh said to him, 'You have made a mistake, indeed, For what you sought, you have found, O dear son. Whatever work you turned your face toward, You found it, since you deemed that to be the work. Whatever you seek on this path, they will give you that; If you practice disbelief, when would they give you faith? The master is very blind, and the Assayer is very discerning; Whatever you wish to carry away, He will say: Take it. If you do not carry away an eye from this world, You will die blind, and rise blind eternally. At every moment you inflict a wound upon your own soul; Do you know your pain, let alone your cure? For one breath you say you have no grief for the soul, Yet in every breath you have nothing but mourning for bread. What befell Adam because of the wheat, Befell the intellect because of the carnal self of people. You remember the self in every breath, As if the greatest name is bread and nothing more.'
