خلق از حجاج بسیاری گریست
زآنکه با او کس نمی یارست زیست

جمله را خواند آن زمان حجاج و گفت
از شما من راز نتوانم نهفت

خویشتن را بنگرید ای مردمان
تا چه بد خلقید حق را این زمان

کو چو من خلقی برون آورده است
بر سر جمله مسلط کرده است

ظلم و عدل و زشت و خوب و کفر و دین
از جهان عقل میخیزد یقین

گر جهان عقل را بر هم نهی
ذرهٔ عشقش کند دستی تهی

عشق را جان صرف کردی محو گیر
عقل را چون صرف خواندی نحو گیر

چون زعین عشق گردی دردناک
پاک گردی پاک از اوصاف پاک

چون نماند در ره عشقت صفات
ذات معشوقت دهد بی تو حیات

لاجرم تا یک نفس باشد ترا
هستی معشوق بس باشد ترا

English translation

The people wept much because of Hajjaj, For no one could endure living with him. At that time, Hajjaj summoned everyone and said, "I cannot hide the secret from you: Look at yourselves, O people, See what wicked creatures of God you are in this era, That He has brought forth a creature like me, And made him dominate over all of you." Oppression and justice, ugly and beautiful, disbelief and religion, Undoubtedly arise from the realm of the intellect. If you were to fold up the world of the intellect, A mere atom of His love would leave it empty-handed. If you spend your soul on love, consider it annihilated; Since you have studied the morphology of the intellect, now grasp its syntax. When you become anguished by the essence of love, You become completely purified, free even of pure attributes. When no attributes remain on the path of your love, The essence of your Beloved grants you life without "you". Inevitably, as long as you possess a single breath, The existence of the Beloved is enough for you.
