داشت اندر خانه اسحق ندیم
بندهٔ در خدمت او مستقیم

دایما هر روز پیش از آفتاب
میکشیدی تا بشب از دجله آب

چون نمیشد تشنگی و آب کم
مینزد یک دم غلام از کار دم

دید روزی خواجه او را بیقرار
فارغ از خلق و شده مشغول کار

خواجه گفتش کیف عیشک ای غلام
گفت کاری سخت دارم بر دوام

در میان دو بلا افتاده ام
سرنگون در زیر پا افتاده ام

هست از یک سویم آبی بی قیاس
وز دگر سو تشنگان ناسپاس

دجله را خالی بکردن روی نیست
تشنه را سیری سر یک موی نیست

در میان دجله و تشنه مدام
مانده ام درآمد و شد والسلام

در میان دین و دنیا مانده ام
گه بمعنی گه به دعوا مانده ام

نه ز دینم میرسد بوئی تمام
نه دمی دنیام میگیرد نظام

من نه این نه آن ز راه افتاده باز
خردغل باری گران راهی دراز

English translation

Ishaq Nadim had in his house A slave, steadfast in his service Always, every day before sunrise He would draw water from the Tigris until nightfall Since the thirst and the water did not diminish The slave did not rest from work for a single breath One day the master saw him restless Detached from people and engrossed in work The master said to him, "How is your life, O slave?" He said, "I have a constantly difficult task I have fallen between two afflictions Headlong I have fallen underfoot On one side of me is immeasurable water And on the other side, ungrateful thirsty people There is no way to empty the Tigris And the thirsty are not satisfied a single hair's breadth Between the Tigris and the thirsty, constantly I am stuck coming and going, and that is all I am stuck between religion and the world Sometimes in meaning, sometimes in pretense I am stuck Neither does a complete scent of religion reach me Nor does my worldly life take order for a moment I am neither this nor that, fallen back from the path With a heavy burden of deceit and a long road"
