شهریاری بود عالی شیوهٔ
در جوارش بود کنج بیوهٔ

بیوه هر روزی برافکندی سپند
در تعجب ماندی شاه بلند

خادمی را خواند روزی شهریار
داد صد دینارش از زر عیار

گفت رو این پیرزن را ده زشاه
پس بپرس از وی که هر روزی پگاه

این سپند از بهر چه سوزی همی
چون نداری یک شبه روزی همی

رفت خادم زر بداد و گفت راز
پیر زن در حال گفت ای سرفراز

هرچه در کل جهان نامش بری
عاقبت چشمش رسد تا بنگری

از گدائی گرچه جان میسوختم
این سپند از بهر آن میسوختم

چون گدائی خود آمد در خورم
گفتمش چشمی رسد تا بنگرم

اینکم تو زر نهادی در کنار
آن گدائی رفت و گشتم سیم دار

دیدی آخر چون مرا چشمی بدید
آن گدائی مرا چشمی رسید

فارغ از عالم گدائی راندن
بهتر از صد پادشائی راندن

چون بود هر روز یک نانت پسند
هیچ قیدی نیز درجانت مبند

English translation

There was a king of noble conduct, In his vicinity was the hut of a widow. The widow would burn wild rue every day, And the lofty king remained in wonder. One day, the monarch called a servant, And gave him a hundred dinars of pure gold. He said, 'Go give this to the old woman from the king, Then ask her, why every day at dawn, For what reason do you burn this wild rue? Since you do not even have a single night's sustenance.' The servant went, gave the gold, and spoke the message, The old woman immediately replied, 'O exalted one! Whatever you mention by name in the entire world, Eventually the evil eye will strike it, as you can see. Although my soul was burning from beggary, I used to burn this wild rue for this reason: Since beggary itself was fitting for me, I thought the evil eye might strike it. Now that you have placed gold by my side, That beggary is gone and I have become wealthy. Did you see in the end how an eye saw me? The evil eye has struck that beggary of mine! To pursue beggary, free from the world, Is better than ruling a hundred kingdoms. When one loaf of bread a day is enough for you, Do not tie any fetters upon your soul.'
