گفت روزی پادشاه عصر خویش
بر کنار بام شد بر قصر خویش

کودکی را دید زیبا و لطیف
مشت میزد سخت پیری را ضعیف

زیر قصر آمد وزو پرسید حال
کز چه او را میدهی این گوشمال

گفت او را میبباید زد بسی
تا نیارد کرد این دعوی کسی

دعوی عشق منش میبوده است
پس سه روز و شب فرو آسوده است

نه طلب کرده مرا نه جسته باز
مانده در عشق این چنین آهسته باز

از همه عالم گزیدست او مرا
شد سه روز اکنون که دیدست او مرا

کرده او دعوی من از دیرگاه
زین بتر در عشق کی باشد گناه

شاه گفتا زین بتر باید زدن
هر دم از نوعی دگر باید زدن

صبر از معشوق عاشق چون کند
کی تواند کرد تا اکنون کند

هرکه بی معشوق میگیرد قرار
کی توان بر ضرب کردن اختصار

زان که هر کو نان این دیوان خورد
بس قفا کو در قفای آن خورد

English translation

It is said that one day the king of his time Went to the edge of the roof of his palace. He saw a beautiful and delicate child Striking a weak old man hard with his fists. He came down from the palace and asked about his state: 'Why are you giving him this punishment?' The child said: 'He must be beaten a lot, So that no one else would dare to make such a claim. He has claimed to love me, Yet for three days and nights he has rested at ease, Neither seeking me, nor searching for me, Remaining so sluggish and slow in love. He chose me out of the entire world, Yet it is now three days since he last saw me. He has made a claim of loving me since long ago; What sin in love could be worse than this?' The king said: 'He must be beaten worse than this, Every moment in a different way. How can a lover be patient without the beloved? How could he ever do so, even until now? Whoever finds peace without the beloved, How can one limit his beating? For whoever eats the bread of this court, Must receive many a blow to the neck in its wake.'
