ناقلی در پیش آن شیخ کبیر
گفت هر روزی یکی داننده پیر

میکند ختمی و در عمری دراز
کار او انیست گفتم با تو باز

شیخ گفتش زان همه قرآن دمی
دامنش نگرفت یک آیت همی

گر گرفتی آیتی زان دامنش
نیستی پروای خواندن چون منش

درد او گر دامنت گیرد دمی
رستگاری یابی از عالم همی

بوی این درد از دل سرمست تو
گر توانی برد بردی دست تو

عاشقان این درد از راه دراز
میشناسند ای عجب از بوی باز

English translation

A narrator, before that great Sheikh, Said, 'Every day a wise elder Completes a recitation [of the Quran], and in a long life, This is his constant practice, I say to you again.' The Sheikh said to him, 'Of all that Quran, not for a moment Did a single verse ever catch hold of his skirt. Had a single verse caught hold of his skirt, He would not have the impulse to read it as he does. If the pain of it takes hold of your skirt for a moment, You will find salvation from the world. The scent of this pain, from your intoxicated heart, If you can carry it, you have won the game. The lovers of this pain, from a long distance, Recognize it, wonderfully, by its scent.'
