بخش ۱۲ - الحكایة و التمثیل / Section 12 - The Tale and the Parable

چون برآمد جان باقی از خلیل
باز پرسیدش خداوند جلیل

کای ز کل خلق نیکو بخت تر
در جهان چه چیز دیدی سخت تر

گفت اگر کشتن پسر را سخت بود
در سقر دیدن پدر را سخت بود

در میان آتشم انداختی
روزگاری با بلا درساختی

گر بسی سختی و پیچاپیچ بود
در بر جان دادن آنها هیچ بود

حق تعالی کرد سوی او خطاب
گفت اگر جان دادنت آمد عذاب

از پس جان دادن و مردن ز خویش
هست چندان سختی زاندازه بیش

کانکه را شد نقد افتادن درو
راحت روحست جان دادن درو

چون چنین در کار مشکل ماندهٔ
روز و شب بهر چه غافل ماندهٔ

چارهٔ این کار مشکل پیش گیر
راه بر مرگست منزل پیش گیر

ترک دنیا گیر و کار مرگ ساز
راه بس دورست ره را برگ ساز

زانکه دنیا گر همه بر هم نهی
باز مانی عاقبت دستی تهی

English translation

When the enduring soul departed from Khalil (Abraham), The Majestic Lord asked him again, "O you who are the most fortunate of all creation, What did you find to be the hardest thing in the world?" He said, "If sacrificing my son was hard, Seeing my father in Hellfire was hard. You cast me into the midst of the fire, For a time You made me dwell with affliction. Though there was much hardship and perplexity, Compared to giving up the soul, they were nothing." The Exalted Truth addressed him, Saying, "If dying came to you as a torment, After giving up the soul and dying to oneself, There is so much hardship, beyond measure, That for the one whose reality is to fall into it, Dying is a comfort to the soul in comparison. Since you are left in such a difficult situation, Why do you remain heedless day and night? Take up the remedy for this difficult affair, The path rests upon death, seek the destination. Forsake the world and prepare for death, The road is very long, gather provisions for the journey. For if you pile up the entire world together, You will ultimately be left empty-handed."
