Section 10 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

There was a city, very strong but ruined, Weathered from head to toe by the sun. Hundreds of thousands of buildings, walls, and doors, Fallen upside down upon one another. A madman happened to see that city, Having been subjected to such wrath. He stood in bewilderment in that place, Looking at the city in every direction. At midday he settled there, As if his foot were stuck in the mud there. A questioner asked him, 'O madman of the path, Why are you left bewildered in this place? You are left deeply perplexed and sorrowful, What are you thinking that you remain so?' He said, 'I am left in restless wonder, That at the time when this city was sturdy, And when it was full of people, all of this, And all of this appeared like a vast Egypt; At that time when this was a city of people, I do not know where I was at that time. And at this time when I have appeared here, Where did so many miserable people go? Where was I, after all, at that time? Or where are those people at this time? I was not there at that time and they were, When I appeared, they became hidden. I do not know the face and path of this matter, I am marveling at this in this place. Who knows what this compass is? Or what the work is outside of this compass? Since I traveled much but saw no way forward, I have now returned heartless and selfless. There is no path for any heart but bewilderment, And no one is aware of the coming and going of the soul.'
