بود کشتی گیر برنائی چو ماه
سرکشان را سرنگون کردی براه

عاقبت از گردش لیل و نهار
شد ز یک مویش سپیدی آشکار

موی را بر کند و بر دستش نهاد
پس سرشک از چشم خون افشان گشاد

گفت در کشتی چو سرافراختم
سرکشان را سرنگون انداختم

ای عجب این موی سرافراختست
سرنگونم بر زمین انداختست

با همه مردان بکوشم وقت کار
نیستم در پیش موئی پایدار

ساختستم با بتر در صبح و شام
وز بتر بهتر همی جویم مدام

با بتر تا چند خواهی ساخت تو
در بتر بهتر چه خواهی باخت تو

بهترین چیزی که عمرست آن دراز
در بتر چیزی که دنیاست آن مباز

ای بیک جو بهر دنیا جان فروش
بوده یوسف را چنین ارزان فروش

چون تو یوسف را بجان نخریدهٔ
لاجرم او را بجان نگزیدهٔ

یوسف جان را کسی سلطان کند
کو خریداری او از جان کند

یوسف جانت عزیزست ای پسر
بهترت از وی چه چیزست ای پسر

قدر یوسف کور نتواند شناخت
جز دلی پر شور نتواند شناخت

English translation

There was a young wrestler, beautiful as the moon, Who would overthrow the rebellious along the way. Eventually, from the turning of day and night, A whiteness became apparent from one of his hairs. He plucked the hair and placed it on his hand, Then unleashed tears from blood-scattering eyes. He said, "When I raised my head in wrestling, I threw the rebellious headlong. Oh wonder! This hair has raised its head, And has thrown me headlong to the ground! I strive with all men at the time of action, Yet I cannot stand firm before a single hair. I have put up with worse morning and evening, And from the worse I constantly seek the better. How long will you put up with the worse? In the worse, what better thing will you lose? The best thing, which is a long life, Do not lose it for the worst thing, which is the world. Oh you who sell your soul for a single barleycorn for the world's sake, You have been selling Joseph so cheaply! Since you have not bought Joseph with your soul, Inevitably, you have not chosen him with your soul. One makes the Joseph of the soul a king Who purchases him with his soul. The Joseph of your soul is precious, oh son, What is better for you than him, oh son? A blind person cannot know the value of Joseph, None but a passionate heart can know it."
