بخش ۷ - الحكایة و التمثیل / Section 7 - The Tale and the Parable

کرهٔ میتاخت سلطان در شکار
میگریخت از وی شکار بیقرار

بر ایاز افتاد اشک آنجایگاه
شاه گفتش ای غلام نیک خواه

از چه پیدا شد چو باران اشک تو
گفت چون پنهان نماند از رشک تو

تا چرا تو بادتک تازی به راه
از پی چیزی که بگریزد ز شاه

چون توئی خواهندهٔ این بینوا
واو ز تو بگریزد این نبود روا

گفت اسب اندر عقب زان تازمش
تا بگیرم یا فرو اندازمش

گفت شد یک رشک من اینجا هزار
تا مرا گیری نه او را در شکار

گفت ازآنش می بگیرم دردناک
تا کشم اورا و خون ریزم بخاک

گفت اکنون رشک من شد صد هزار
تا چرا نکشی مرا وآنگاه زار

گفت ازآنش میکشم من ای غلام
تاخورم او را که خواهد این مقام

گفت شد رشک من اینجا بی قیاس
تا چرا قوتی نسازی از ایاس

گفت اگر من قوت سازم از تنت
محو گردی هیچ ناید از منت

گفت لا والله اگر شاه جهان
قوت خود سازد ازین شوریده جان

گر کنون هستم غلامی ناکسم
آن زمان محمود گردم این بسم

English translation

The Sultan was galloping his steed while hunting, The restless prey was fleeing from him. Tears fell upon Ayaz at that place, The King said to him, 'O well-wishing slave, Why have your tears appeared like rain?' He said, 'Since it cannot remain hidden, out of jealousy of you. Why do you gallop like the wind on the path, In pursuit of something that flees from the King? Since you are the seeker of this destitute creature, And it flees from you, this is not proper.' He said, 'I gallop my horse behind it for this reason, So that I may catch it or strike it down.' He said, 'My jealousy has become a thousandfold here, That you should catch me, not it, in the hunt!' He said, 'I catch it painfully for this reason, To kill it and spill its blood on the dirt.' He said, 'Now my jealousy has become a hundred thousandfold, That why do you not kill me, and that too miserably?' He said, 'I kill it for this reason, O slave, To eat it; who would desire this state?' He said, 'My jealousy has become immeasurable here, That why do you not make a meal out of Ayaz?' He said, 'If I make a meal out of your body, You will be obliterated, nothing will come of you from me.' He said, 'No, by Allah! If the king of the world, Makes his meal out of this turbulent soul, Though I am now a worthless slave, At that time I will become Mahmud; this is enough for me.'
