چون ایاز از چشم بدرنجور شد
عاقبت از چشم سلطان دور شد

ناتوان بر بستر زاری فتاد
در بلا و رنج و بیماری فتاد

چون خبر آمد به محمود از ایاس
خادمی را خواند شاه حق شناس

گفت میرو تا به نزدیک ایاز
پس بدو گوی ای ز شاه افتاده باز

دور از روی تو زآن دورم ز تو
کز غم رنج تو رنجورم ز تو

تاکه رنجوریت فکرت میکنم
تا تو رنجوی ندانم یا منم

گر تنم دور اوفتاد از هم نفس
جان مشتاقم بدو نزدیک بس

مانده ام مشتاق جانی از تو من
نیستم غایب زمانی از تو من

چشم بد بدکاری بسیار کرد
نازنینی را چو تو بیمار کرد

این بگفت و گفت در ره زود رو
همچو آتش آی و همچون دود رو

پس مکن در ره توقف زینهار
همچو آب از برق میرو برق وار

گر کنی در راه یک ساعت درنگ
ما دو عالم بر تو گردانیم تنگ

خادم سرگشته در راه ایستاد
تا بنزدیک ایاز آمد چو باد

دید سلطان را نشسته پیش او
مضطرب شد عقل دوراندیش او

لرزه بر اندام خادم اوفتاد
گوئیا در رنج دایم اوفتاد

گفت با شه چون توان آویختن
این زمان خونم بخواهد ریختن

خورد سوگندان که در ره هیچ جای
نه باستادم نه بنشستم ز پای

می ندانم ذرهٔ تا پادشاه
پیش ازمن چون رسید اینجایگاه

شاه اگردارد وگرنه باورم
گر در این تقصیر کردم کافرم

شاه گفتش نیستی محرم درین
کی بری تو راه ای خادم درین

من رهی دزدیده دارم سوی او
زانکه نشکیبم دمی بی روی او

هر زمان زان ره بدو آیم نهان
تا خبر نبود کسی را در جهان

راه دزدیده میان ما بسی است
رازها در ضمن جان ما بسی است

از برون گرچه خبر خواهم ازو
در درون پرده آگاهم ازو

راز اگر میپرسم از بیرونیان
در درون با اوست جانم در میان

جان چو گردد محو در جانان تمام
جان همه جانان بگیرد بر دوام

گرچه در صورت بود رنگ دوی
جز یکی نبود ولیکن معنوی

گر دو تار ریسمان پیدا شود
چون تو برهم تابیش یکتا شود

English translation

When Ayaz fell ill due to the evil eye, He eventually went far from the Sultan's sight. He fell helpless on the bed of affliction, Entangled in calamity, pain, and illness. When news of Ayaz reached Mahmud, The truth-recognizing king summoned a servant. He said: 'Go to Ayaz, And say to him: O you who have fallen away from the king! I am far from your face, and that is why I am far, For I am afflicted by the grief of your suffering. As long as I think of your affliction, I know not whether you are the afflicted one or I. Though my body has fallen far from my companion, My longing soul is very close to him. I remain longing for a soul from you, I am not absent from you for a single moment. The evil eye has done much mischief, Making a beloved like you ill.' He said this and added: 'Go quickly on the path, Come like fire and go like smoke. Do not pause on the way at all, Like water from lightning, go lightning-like. If you delay for even an hour on the way, We will make both worlds narrow for you.' The bewildered servant stood on the path, Until he came to Ayaz like the wind. He saw the Sultan sitting before him, And his far-sighted intellect became anxious. A tremor fell upon the servant's body, As if he had fallen into eternal suffering. He said to the king: 'How can one contend with the king? Now my blood will be shed.' He swore oaths that nowhere on the path Had he stopped, nor had he sat down. 'I do not know in the least how the king Arrived at this place before me. Whether the king believes me or not, If I failed in this duty, may I be an infidel.' The king said to him: 'You are not an initiate in this, How could you find the way in this, O servant? I have a secret path to him, For I cannot endure a moment without his face. Every moment I come to him secretly by that path, So that no one in the world knows of it. There are many secret paths between us, And many secrets are contained within our souls. Though outwardly I ask news of him, Inwardly, behind the veil, I am aware of him. If I ask the secrets from outsiders, Inwardly, my soul is in communion with him. When the soul becomes completely annihilated in the Beloved, The Beloved takes over the soul forever. Though in form there is a color of duality, Spiritually, there is nothing but oneness. If two threads of a rope appear, When you twist them together, they become one.'
