Section 3 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

There was a fortunate thief who, at bedtime, Went into the quarters of Ahmad Khazruya. Although he searched around the house a lot, He found nothing and grew frantic because of it. That unaware man wanted to leave, Hopelessly resolving to head for the door. The Sheikh called out and said, "O noble man, You are leaving in despair, come back. Take the bucket, draw water, perform ablution, Do not breathe a word until bright daylight, occupied with prayer." The thief, at his command, set to work, He engaged in prayer, remembrance, and seeking forgiveness. When the turn of the next day arrived, A nobleman brought a hundred dinars of gold. He gave it to the Sheikh and told him, "This is yours." The Sheikh said, "This is specifically for our guest." He tossed the gold to the thief, saying, "This is exclusively yours, This is the reward for your one night of sincerity." A wondrous spiritual state appeared in the thief, Tears rained down, his soul full of seeking. He fell to the ground without pride and ego, He repented from thievery and highway robbery. He said to the Sheikh, "I, a worthless thief, Had taken the wrong path out of ignorance. One night that I hastened for the sake of the Truth, I found what I would not find in a lifetime. One night that I prayed for His sake, I was delivered from thievery and became independent. If I do God's work day and night, I will find good fortune in both domains. I have repented until the day of my death, There is no task for me except obeying His commands." He said this, and the man became a companion of fortune, He became a disciple of the Sheikh and a man of spiritual work. So that you may know that in both worlds, No one ever suffers a loss with God. Since you came from high above to this downward slope, Since you came in adornment and beauty like women, The face of the world is entirely a downward slope, Set up the watermill, for your water has flowed away. If, like the revolving sky, you resolve upon this field, With every breath you will turn a hundred watermills. Abandon the world so that your faith remains, Give that away from your hand so that you may have this. For whatever precious thing goes out of your hand, Its burden also falls off from your back.
