در رهی محمود میشد با سپاه
از سپاه و پیل او عالم سیاه

هم زمین همچون فلک بود از شرار
هم فلک همچون زمین بود از غبار

گاو گردون و زمین از بانگ کوس
هردو قانع گشته از یک من سبوس

بود پیش راه در ویرانهٔ
بر سر دیوار اودیوانهٔ

چون بدید از دور روی شهریار
گفت ای سرگشتهٔ فرتوت کار

این همه پیل و سپاه و کار چیست
وین همه آشوب و گیر و دار چیست

گفت تا با این همه از پیش و پس
گردهٔ نان میخورم هر روز بس

مرد مجنون گفت من خوش میخورم
زانکه من بی این همه شش میخورم

چون نصیبت زین همه یک مانده ست
گرد کردن این همه بی فائده ست

English translation

Mahmud was traveling on a road with his army, From his army and elephants, the world turned black. The earth was like the sky from the sparks, And the sky was like the earth from the dust. The ox of the heavens and the earth, from the sound of the drum, Both became satisfied with a single measure of bran. On the way, in a ruin, There was a madman on top of a wall. When he saw the king's face from afar, He said, 'O bewildered one, old in deeds! What is the purpose of all these elephants, army, and action? And what is all this tumult, conflict, and commotion?' He (the king) said, 'So that with all this before and behind me, I may eat one round loaf of bread every day, and that is enough.' The madman said, 'I eat happily, Because without all this, I eat six! Since your portion of all this is only one, Gathering all this is useless.'
