گفت ایاز آمد بر سلطان پگاه
چهرهٔ گلناریش مانند کاه

نه طراوت مانده در رخسار او
نه حلاوت مانده در گفتار او

گفت شاه آخر چه بودت ای ایاس
کاتشم در دل فکندی بیقیاس

بود پیش شاه خلقی بیشمار
هر یکی از بهر کاری بیقرار

گفت خلق بی حسابند این همه
چون بگویم چون حجابند این همه

شاه خالی کرد حالی جایگاه
تا ایاز آنجا بماند و پادشاه

گفت اکنون راز برگوی این زمان
چون حجاب خلق برخاست از میان

گفت شاها من حجابم چون کنم
خویش را بو کز میان بیرون کنم

چون حجاب خویش در عالم منم
خلق بود آن دم حجاب این دم منم

تا که میماند ز من یک موی باز
نیست روی آنکه بتوان گفت راز

چون نمانم من تو مانی جمله پاک
راز من آنگه برون جو شد ز خاک

پاکبازانی که درویش آمدند
هر نفس در محو خود بیش آمدند

در حقیقت جمله او را خواستند
لاجرم خصمی خود را خاستند

English translation

Ayaz came to the Sultan early in the morning, His pomegranate-like face as pale as straw. Neither freshness remained in his cheeks, Nor sweetness remained in his speech. The king said, 'After all, what has happened to you, O Ayaz? For you have cast an immeasurable fire into my heart.' There was a countless crowd before the king, Each one restless for a task. He said, 'All these people are innumerable, How can I speak, for all these people are a veil?' The king immediately emptied the place, So that only Ayaz and the king remained there. He said, 'Now tell the secret at this time, Since the veil of the people has been lifted from the midst.' He said, 'O king, I am the veil, what should I do? Would that I could remove myself from the midst. Since I am my own veil in the world, The people were the veil that moment; this moment, I am. As long as a single hair of 'me' remains behind, There is no possibility that the secret can be told. When I do not remain, You remain entirely pure; My secret will then boil forth from the dust. The pure players who became dervishes, With every breath, came further into their own self-effacement. In truth, they desired Him entirely, Inevitably, they rose in enmity against themselves.'
